As a modo user I would adivse to start with Blender. Currently it's very good, and does some things better then modo. Like having a shrinkwrap modifier. Which is ace. I just started to learn blender because the tutorials are so good. Start with CGboost blender 2.8 launchpad, and then do the Master Car Creation in Blender. I still prefer modo by a small margin, but even if you know other applications Blender is still worth learning.
And some very good paid plugins are Meshmachine, Hardops, boxcutter.

As for modo, i don't have any recommendations for good starting tutorials. Bu there is a guy who;s tutorials are fantastic in general, he used to to modo, now he does blender. His name is Peter Stammbach, he sounds like grandpa simpson. His tutorials are usually intelligent, quick, and to the point.
