I'm doing the cover for an album, need to do the 3d design for a creature and then some graphic design (probably illustration) on top.
How much should I charge my client considering this is the first commissionI take?

Don't charge much and hope thus you get more work through them by spread of word.

I assume it isn't a model that can be used for advanced production like animations and such but as a stand-still pose for a cover.

I would say 50€/USD.

Don't be sad. Right now you want to get more work in and get your name at somewhat size out there. I know how much effort you had to put in the path of learning all the things to get to this result you present here. But you will be damned if you don't offer under the standard price-range.

This is an advanced model, It has an armature and Im constantly posing it to try different compositions
It's also optimized for videogames/video (I know this wasnt necessary but It's my usual pipeline) so I could make some animations if asked
I think you are right in the sense that charging lower might get me more work in the future tho

How many days work is it? Don't charge less than $150 per days work.

Pricks like this are driving down the working salary for full time freelancers and are devaluing the 3D skillset.

I agree with you, it's probably a combination of me using bad lightning in that render and not fully comprehendng the use of ambient occlusion. Im looking into it rn
>>667233
I've been working for a couple of weeks now, maybe putting in 3-5 hours per day, but a lot of this time is invested in either rendering or me learning some new stuff and then applying it.
I'm still an amateur in many ways and dont think a pro would take as long as im am doing hence why i dont think it's fair to charge 150 per day
However, I think 200-250 would be the sweet spot here, maybe 300 if I can get real close to my desired level of polish

how did you come up to these numbers? is it just at how much you value your work or is there more? what you say if your client asks why is your price so high and why it cost as much as it does?

>what you say if your client asks why is your price so high and why it cost as much as it does?
Average effective work hours spent on the model, so everything ranging from the sculpting to the painting of textures, not accounting for rendering times, activities where im basically idle or researching...
Extra based on experience, so time you spent learning that skill and not everyone is able to put in the work hours right away without basic knowledge of the programs
Then there's the artistic value, ofc, which should be like a middle ground of how how much you value your art and how you think it's perceived I guess. So I might value my art quite a bit (maybe not this specific model, but the illustrations i'll work on top of it, eye for graphic design etc) but then realistically I have to understand that Im still a fairly unknown creator and that visuals isnt even my main draw (this guy found out abt me through my music), so you lower that fee
For this specific project the 150-250 I'll ask will be based purely on work hours, Im not taking any creative extra because I dont think im in a possition to do so and because this is the kind of work that I enjoy (something I'd be doing anyways for myself) and it's helping me expand my portfolio

lol you guys really think I should ask for more?
Honestly the only side of bussiness I know if music and that is fucked, indie banda ask for maybe 5 dollars for a 10 track album they might have been writing for an entire year

>> No.667269

>>667263
First, you should talk about money BEFORE you start working on it.
Second, you should ask for a sum of money UPFRONT unless you know the customer and trust them (very much).
Third, you should make absolutely clear with the customer how much revisions they get and how much time they can expect you working on the product even if you settled for a complete price (not based on hours/days).

>> No.667273

>>667263
if the band is asking for a complicated 3D character posed and rendered, as an album cover then they should know their price and the price of the artist who created that. Not saying you should ask for more, 300-350 sounds as a good price, for the final result and your work time.

If you gonna do this professionally you need to treat it as a regular job and charge clients per hour,
you decide what your rate is and use that and then guesstimate how long it is gonna take to figure out a fair ballpark price
for both you and your client.

Your time and effort is valuable and you should not give it away to people since there are way too many artists in this world
who make stuff for free for their friends.

Like last year I spent 62 hours making a very elaborate fine-arts type sleeve tattoo design for a friend.
Guy paid me back with a $20 dinner. Now I didn't do this for the money as this is my close friend but there are loads of us out there that keep doing shit like that.
By doing this for free I've probably cheated some artist out of at least a $1500 commission if he'd taken his request to the market.

>> No.667282

>>667279
>62 hours
>$1500 commission
More like 3000 for the design alone + 1000 for the tattoo.
Your friend should be more grateful that you are so generous.

>> No.667306

pro-tip:
don't ever get sucked into the 'for exposure' argument, especially if the person who's commissioned you is spouting that nonsense.

musicians and anyone working in the music scene (event organisers/promoters) are particularly bad about this sort of thing. if they're offering dirt cheap rates, anyone they know will offer dirt cheap rates and you will forever be the cheap art guy.

i know this from experience because i do posters for a friend. i do them because they're fun and i basically get to do whatever i want. he's constantly approached by other promoters about commissioning me and he always asks them what their ballpark price will be because he knows what my minimums would be: not once has any promoter in that city offered a sum of money that i didn't laugh at.

It is mine, It makes me happy to know someone considers it better, im aware that the artist on the left probably does way less sculpting and bases his work on the good use of smart materials, but I still think that the design itself is very original and there's a lot of merit to that.

Depends on few things.
What country are they from, what country are you from, and how much time will it take vs how much it should take you.
If you are both from some shithole like India charge your local average pay +50-100%
If they are from a rich country charge their own rates.
If you are from Canada and they from Nigeria they probably cant afford you

But assuming your live in first world you should charge 150-300$ a day
As for how much it takes, i could make a polished model with no real rig or retopo, just auto shit or zbrush composite in 2 days and maybe another 2 for variations, if you take more than 5 work days you are taking too long and you need more experience

There's a deep weakness is most artists psychological makeup. Something ugly and weak and disgusting.

This twitter is an perfect example. Artists bitching uglily about people targeting their weaknesses, without doing anything but bitching and showing more weakness. It's weak, pathetic, and disgusting.

As a rule, people are quick to target on those kind of behavior. That's just how the world is.

This psychological weakness is particularly shown in things like >>667478, where people created a chart to convince themselves that working for free is bad. They need reassurance to convince themselves that working for free is bad. I will repeat it. They need a chart to convince themselves that working for free is bad (and rules about what to do in that situation). This is deeply unsettling.

>They're already over that weakness.
False. The entire point of the followers of that twitter account is group-herding behavior and constant reassurance that they need to be paid, and that they are right to ask for a payment. This is weakness. Group herding weakness masquerading as righteous indignation. If those artists were strong they wouldn't bitch senselessly about someone asking a mean thing from them on the internet. They would ignore and move on.

Shaming tactics and group herding appeal to the artist mind: they appeal to the exact same weakness that makes people ask them for freebies. If another group shames them into working for free, they do it. It's their own weaknesses the problem, nothing else.

I mean a lot of artists are going to be sensitive given that ties into the job. That said, you're making blanket statements about artists, it's not that black and white.
