Of course lot of artists are poor because they don't give much of a shit about money, the concept simply doesn't excite them.
Met so many people who view it more like a necessary evil to sustain themselves, it's rare to come across commercial artists that seem very happy while performing well in that role.
An exciting project is the real reward, and why artists frequently sell themselves short on the paycheck and burn themselves out for someone else's benefit.

Almost everyone justify themselves in some way no matter what. Even most rapists and murders will be able to deliver you a version that somehow is supposed to justify their actions.
