Is it better to get Blender or just pirate Maya/3Ds max if I wanna make 3d models? If piracy is the better option should I pirate Maya or 3Ds max?

All hypothetical of course.

You'll need to start with modeling principles which are common to all such software first, making the question moot really. Just pick one and start learning. Spending time at this stage in the learning process fretting over which software to use is largely a mistake. I'm assuming you don't have prior experience of course.

You don't even need to pirate anything these days. Autodesk provides a free educational / hobbyist / non-commercial licence that lasts 3 years and can be renewed indefinitely for all their software.
As for the software choice itself, I hear that 3DSMax is generally recommended for poly modeling, but I started with Maya and found it to be able to do pretty much anything I could ever want and more. Modeling, animation, VFX, motion graphics, complex shader systems, particle simulations, rendering. The only thing its not really good for is sculpting, or rather, zbrush is so far ahead of everyone else that nobody even considers anything else for sculpting these days.
Can't really say much about blender as an outsider, but it does seem to have a very active and passionate, if somewhat newbish userbase. If you're only starting out and want a lot of easy to find tutorials and guides, maybe thats the best choice, once you get a good understanding of principles of 3D in general its easy to swap between software imo. Good luck.

You are a voice of reason in a sea of idiots. I'd like to add that everyone should try each tool to see which one fits their personality best. I don't like the vibes of some software packages even if they are feature-wise virtually identical. If I can't fix it with a theme, then I will look for alternatives. You're going to be staring at it for potentially hundreds (maybe thousands) of hours, so you better like it. I'd say you should consider the community, but let's face it, they're all bad. Blender's might be the worst, though.

I tend to prefer FOSS because I really, really hate launchers and "walled gardens". Or having to sign up to get a download link. I don't know the current state of Maya/Max when it comes to installation, but Blender is a single, self-installing executable, installs into a folder, and all the tools are inside so you could (in theory) never have to leave. In practice, you'll probably prefer to paint your textures in GIMP/Photoshop.

I'm using Maya, Max and Blender on a daily basis
and in my opinion every software has it's strenght in different

Regarding blender... just try it, it's free

In terms of autodesk software:

1: with a classic polygon modelling workflow max shits on everything i've used, it's greatest strength is that it's non destructive since it uses a modifier stack, if you wanna do anything modelling related max can do it.

Maya on the other hand excels in everything that is related to rigging and animation, in my opinion the only real modelling related advantage maya has over max in terms of modelling would be if you're going for a nurbs related workflow f.e. automotive modelling.

But generally speaking if you just wanna do models you'll be fine with any software anyways.

>> No.725745

What do you like about blender?

>> No.725747

There is literally no reason not to try Blender. It's fucking free. You can download it right now and have it running in seconds.

I would advise any and every beginner to do that, simply for that reason alone.

Maya, Max and Zbrush are all good and they all do one or more things better than Blender and which one is the 'best' will depend on what you are modelling, but Blender is an excellent general purpose 3D modelling program. It isn't massively specialized for poly modelling like Max, it isn't specialized for animation like Maya, and it isn't massively specialized for sculpting like Zbrush.

But it is very capable of doing all of those things with high quality results. Honestly, with 2.8, sculpting is just as good as Zbrush for most things. Only an experienced 3D artist would reap the benefits of using Zbrush over Blender as things are right now.

I found learning resources to be far more plentiful for maya if its ONLY 3d modeling, pushing verts then blender will do.

If it's more then get the tool that's right for the job.

For rigging/animation it's Maya for sim it's Houdini, for sculpting it's Zbrush (but only if you learn all the secondary and tertiary functionality, otherwise you might as well use blender)

As a modo user I would adivse to start with Blender. Currently it's very good, and does some things better then modo. Like having a shrinkwrap modifier. Which is ace. I just started to learn blender because the tutorials are so good. Start with CGboost blender 2.8 launchpad, and then do the Master Car Creation in Blender. I still prefer modo by a small margin, but even if you know other applications Blender is still worth learning.
And some very good paid plugins are Meshmachine, Hardops, boxcutter.

Meshmachine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEiWdodIcSo&list=PLcEiZ9GDvSdXR9kd4O6cdQN_6i0LOe5lw&index=4

As for modo, i don't have any recommendations for good starting tutorials. Bu there is a guy who;s tutorials are fantastic in general, he used to to modo, now he does blender. His name is Peter Stammbach, he sounds like grandpa simpson. His tutorials are usually intelligent, quick, and to the point.

But all my recent projects have been blender projects, I guess because it's quite fun to explore features of blender and also because its a single piece of software doing it all.
