Basically soft-break the 3D "always on model" scheme.

Blend shapes.

Get the camera view direction and compare it to the view direction you want.
The dot product of both (normalized) vectors is the cosine of their angle and can be used to judge the "view similarity" and fade in or fade out the blend shapes.
