This is one of the best rated courses I found on Udemy. Have I just wasted 12 bucks?

all teachers should need to state their age, portfolio, job experience and amount of years they worked with the software. otherwise their course should be put into "hobbyist tutorials".
if they make false statements they should be permanently banned from udemy.

Working as a 3d teacher is very different from working as a 3d artist. I wouldn't trust it beyond learning how to operate software. Good production workflows and techniques must be learned elsewhere. Not everybody with that knowledge is willing to share, has the resources for it, or even is allowed to. Fortunately, some can and do. But their shit can be extending. Again, fortunately, a lot of it can be found pirated.

Just become a pirate, bro.

think about it. the preview is so awful that anyone who can tell good art from bad won't touch the course, so the reviewers are drawn from a pool of people who have already proven themselves incapable of basic judgement. i'm sure they all look at whatever monstrosities they've produced based on this tutorial and just swoon with pride.

for sculpting specifically you can just follow zbrush courses in blender. i learned a lot from speedchar on youtube, he also has longer paid courses.

Most 3D teachers produce nothing but trash and here's why:
When you offer paid courses you want publicity. Sure, you can put a lot of effort into your course and teach them the ins and outs of the subject, but a far more cost effective and wide spread method is having them creating models in a little time as possible. Quantity over quality.
That way, a few people are hopefully going to land some small jobs or post halfway decent shit online and refer others to your course, generating income.
I actually have a "3D academy" (no joke) nearby asking 25000€ per semester. Their biggest selling point? Helping you put together a portfolio as quickly as possible. Teaching you proper 3D flow is but a side note on their page.
As much shit as hobbyists on YouTube get, at least the smaller ones create those tutorials with the intent of actually teaching you. Most are still crap, but their heart is in the right place.

Blender is extremely accessible, so people can pick it up and make mediocre tutorials extremely easily. Mix this with the fact that Skillshare & Udemy are also accessible, and you've got a sea of autism no other 3D software has.

In other words, there's a lot more burden on your end to research the instructors you learn from. Browse their artstation, look at their free YouTube tutorials, what does their Patreon look like, etc.
