If a hedge fund declares bankruptcy and can't pay guess who pays? Who ever lended them money to leverage their positions.

If the Banks can't pay then the Gov will have to do another bailout. If the Gov decide not to bailthem out and we're left with thousands of FTDs orders, then the stock market itself will come crashing down because no one will have any faith in the system.
