This might be a retarded question, but how are long-term capital gains tax calculated? Say you put in 10k, leave it there for 10 years and it becomes 500k (not realistic, but for sake of example).

Say after those 10 years, you don't have a job or any other income and decide to withdraw 25k each year for 10 years. Would you pay 0% capital gains tax since that is below the 15% or 20% tax brackets, or would you pay 20% capital gains tax since your total investment gain is $490,000? Or would any amount you withdraw be taxed proportionally to the total gain (for the above example, the total gain if all withdrawn at once would be roughly 9% taxed at 0%, 82% taxed at 15%, and 9% taxed at 20%), then any amount you withdraw would be taxed at these same proportions?
