Hey /biz/, I'm an index fund investor primarily, but I'm not convinced that these "mad gains" you always talk about can be realised.

The Nikkei is a good example of a stock market which has never really recovered from extremely high valuations, and has been dropping down ever since. Why would the S&P/FTSE/DAX and so on not face a similar fate?

Surely it's better to pick a variety of stable companies with a strong monopoly position in a variety of sectors (such as National Grid and Intel) and reinvest dividends?

Stock markets can't go up forever (in real terms).
