Unfortunately there's no concrete way to recognize the actual top, its only ever obvious in hindsight. The safest way to protect yourself from downside would be to systematically take some profits along the way.
Other than that, things like search trends are just noise and not a real signal imo. The only other thing you can do is learn technical analysis and watch the high time frame charts like the weekly, and watch for things like moving averages to stay bullish and for price to keep making higher highs.
I was lucky enough to sell close enough to the top after I saw ETH failing to reclaim $1000 in late jan 2018.

I had disgruntled BTC OG's tell me the same thing about 2013 back in 2016. Market cycles and human psychology never change. Crypto is still tiny relative to trad markets and it's still got a long way to go. And that's without considering the future potential of useful projects like link, eth, and btc.

I know, that's another thing why I'm thinking about ETCs.
I think those are just easier to get in times like these. I'm not sure though, that's why I'm asking.
Certain ETCs have a physical replication of their stock market value (so they actually take the cash and buy the gold for it).

In case of Xetra Gold or EUWAX (german gold ETCs) you can even order the gold, liquidating your position.
I believe that on short notice (like now until 2022) an ETC would be a good choice, but on the long run I'd probably prefer physical gold.

Unless of course people have some overwhelmingly positive experiences with ETCs.
