It’s pretty simple. They got fucked over by covid while at the same time being sabotaged from the inside by a consulting agency called BCG. Now covid’s over and they’re under new leadership. They also raised a billion dollars by doing an offering at the peak of the “meme stock” craze. So they got a shit ton of cash on hand. Closed down underperforming stores, opened new ones in popular areas, leaned into collectibles like Pokémon cards, upped their digital sales numbers. On top of that there are about 200,000 plebbitors who will go out of their way to buy everything they need from GameStop. Shit like batteries. People also realized that GameStop offers warranties on shit like Xbox controllers which always fail within like six months. So GameStop makes money on the warranty, buys defective controllers, refurbishes them for next to nothing and resells them at near-full price and pockets the difference. This is basically their main source of income. Buy used, sell used. The whole “physical is dead” narrative has been spun for years but it’s not even close to true. Approximately 30% of games are still sold physical and the profit margin on used products is massive.
