i dunno. just a guess on my part, but i think there might be some severity bias at work.
the same bias that resulted in incorrect high fatality rates could have also resulted overestimation of its severity/morbidity, etc.
the real culprit was probably high R0 with asymptomatic spread. quantity vs. quality. you get a high number of severe cases just through the sheer number of infections.
i could be wrong, of course. we'll see when all of the panic subsides and more data accumulates over time. blah blah blah blah
