So now I'm really confused. What's the difference between day trading and free riding? Are they not exactly the same thing? If I day trade (Buying and selling the same stock in the same day I get a good faith violation.). three in a week gets a ban on my brokerage account). If I free ride (Buying and selling the same stock in the same day I get a good faith violation) I get at 12 month ban.

What is the actual difference? I can't day trade without incurring a free ride violation because they're exactly the same thing.

How does one actually day trade? For reference, I have an individual vanguard account with over 25k in it. What am I missing?
