the beauty is you don't even need to keep an eye on the market yourself, just find a bunch of companies that buy and sell other company stocks and get some of theirs. their job is to buy/sell all day every day, as long as you get stocks in several different such companies it's very unlikely that more than half of them lose value. just make sure they aren't new companies and that they pay dividends. and remember that you have never lost money unless you actually sell your stock, so don't sell at a loss unless you need it for a surgery or something.
