When you are trying to value something else as currency than the USD, you have to have the means to protect it from the US military, which is the only thing that backs the US as reserve currency around the world. Alternative currencies are a threat to US hegemony, which is why crypto"currencies" aren't a threat; if they were a threat, they would already be neutralized and regulated into oblivion with all the armies of lawyers in America mobilized for total war against crypto. They can't do that with gold and silver. Even when Roosevelt issued orders of confiscation, they weren't able to take it.
