Omni could be considered as utility token and is an integral part of the Omni Layer protocol:

send-to-owners transactions, which allows to send tokens to all holders of a token, requires a fee nominated in Omni
all trades of the traditional BTC/Omni exchange have to go through Omni, i.e. Omni serves as on-ramp for users who want use the decentralized exchange, e.g. to then trade Omni for Maid
trades on the token exchange are traded against Omni in one way or another, e.g. a user who wants to trade TetherUS for Maid can trade USDT for Omni and then Omni for Maid

In the future we want to remove the constraint of the third point and allow trading of any pair without involving Omni. However, this is coming with a fee and the fee is going to be distributed to Omni holders.

We had two strategy meetings this year to set the course for 2018 and a road map will be produced and published at some point.

Regarding the other points and ongoing projects:

Port to Litecoin: this was requested by Bitfinex and we have a working version
Rivetz integration: this is something Sean prototyped, but a proper integration is pending
Futures/CDF trading: Patrick hired two developers to work on this and it's being worked on in a private repository
Fee distribution system: it's ready to go and integrated into Omni Core, but not yet activated
Digital objects: this is a requirement for BLOCKv's and vAtomic's on-chain commitment; the code is written and currently under test and review
