Either is valid and I doubt the big brokers fuck people around. I'd wager some of them stopped trading because they have just enough real shares to cover their customers positions and do not want/cannot tolerate people buying fakes that will be on that brokers books to resolve. Marking bbbyq PCO also means no fomo into a squeeze and less fuckery to try and manipulate the price so it both prevents the rest of the market from getting completely destroyed and stops anyone on the short side from opening new shorts to sell into the market. Anyone that's already holding is in, everyone else can only watch, and this shit will be resolved. People on phonebrokers and smaller brokerages run a real risk of getting force liquidated but the fidelity/schwab/vanguard/ibroker folks are fine so long as they're in a cash settlement only account with no margin or options approval. Personally I direct registered a thousand shares a few months back and have the rest with fidelity, the setup process does take a bit for an AST account and I wouldn't put anything in there that I wanted to sell ever.
