Anyone want to explain this to me? Sometimes I like to look at the depth book and watch trades happen. How are the matches made? Sometimes I'll see a HUGE number of a share on the ASK, and nothing is happening for a bit, then all the sudden a huge chunk of the BID disappears, sometimes many cents wider than that ASK. Now I know that as "slippage" but how is that determined, and how does the computer decide how wide to go? Also it seems like the time it takes to make the matches is seemingly random.

Perhaps a circular question, but I cannot really verbalize it any better. Anyone have any resources on this phenomena?
