The Soviets didn't close down the ancient mints in Hungary or Czeckoslovakia or any of their other puppet States. The "people" running Sweden seem to desire symbolically humiliating the nation as a goal in and of itself.

All this changing over of money that happened with the adoption of the Euro meant that people are disconnected from their nations' histories more than they've ever been.
Before 2001 you had people interacting with coins that had actual historical depth to them, but now they're just potmetal tokens with homogenous designs.
>France using century old designs on coins dating back to the 60s
>Germany, where you could still find money from the tail end of Allied occupation in your change
>The Netherlands using a currency dating back over 700 years where it was still possible to occasionally find Silver in circulation
>Spain, with Franco era Pesetas still in use
>Austria, where you could still occasionally find Silver in circulation
With ordinary people interacting with only a few bland coin designs from the past 20 years it helps cement in their minds an idea of a sort of eternal present. Sure coins had been deteriorating into ugly shitmetal slop ever since the WWI, but at least pre-Euro, you could see the decline firsthand in most European Countries.
