The difference is barrier to entry
It is pretty easy to download an app on your phone, link a bank account, and send all your money.
And if someone is pretty new to the market, they might not fully comprehend the risk, or they might convince themselves that their decision is right, etc.

I get the comparison, but with physically risky activities you are really there, you feel it. Internet phone gambling doesn't automatically activate the animal parts of your brain, you have to do that consciously. Obviously that guy didn't, or else he wouldn't have bought options on ATVI lol.
