Holding BUILD gives you a vote in proposals, which could be anything related to the ecosystem, incl. which projects get funding.

The cool part is that all projects built on the platform give back a portion of their revenue back to BUILD. So they can fund more projects.

BSG is currently by far their most succesful project which will draw both funds and developer attention.

Price went up yesterday because of Basis Gold, built on the Build.finance platform, was announced (will start in 4 days). Due to the founder of Build, 0xdev0 (he also made https://dsd.tools/)) being a prominent member of the DSD community it's gaining quite some traction under Dynamic Set Dollar supporters and early adopters. If you read the medium article, the project is about an algorithmic synthetic gold asset that has the same mechanics as Dynamic Set Dollar. The BSG token is targeting the price of gold (currently $1,850). One of the methods how the initial 50 BSG tokens get distributed is providing to the BUILD/ETH pool.
