Honestly, I have very mixed feelings about gold, the only way I see it being valuable is when shit hits the fan but at that point having guns/ammo might be more important.
That in mind if bonds isn't your cup of tea then my second recommendation is just going ham on physical goods but via derivatives. So for example I like steel and steel companies will never go away, thus steel futures and companies I keep in my back pocket accordingly.
Another thing would be agriculture, people need food and large-scale failure (in the US) won't be allowed so that's probably more safe than not.
Also to add trading coffee futures can be fun since it's price action is autistic.
