Early Internet meme landscape was beautiful. It all sort of died when Youtube came out and people stopped making Flash content/uploading existing content to YT. Then Reddit happened.

SomethingAwful was really the genesis block of Internet meme culture, and 4chan was always a cruder more anonymous darker corner of those ideas. Using cracked copies of flash and photoshop were a common content cornerstone. More posts on 4chan had images, and modifying images in the thread was a common way to give power to your post by showing effort.

Flash content and YTMND stuff was generally higher quality ideas and the presence of audio leading to memetic songs has basically become a lost art.

Also there were a lot of furries.
