I dont know the technical details, but the idea is that you can proof your identity by referencing an encrypted data-transaction on the Tangle. By having the key to encrypt this transcation you proof that you are you. This can be made more elaborate by having all the information that are linked about your identity (date of birth, sex, citizen number, degrees, etc) on different transactions. This way you can show EXACTLY the right amount of information to somebody without revealing anything more. And all of this works without a centralized data-lake that gets hacked anyway in 2 years.
