When the Romans moved to conquer the Greeks, it was incredibly easy and they considered them utterly weak and degenerate. Philosophy and the rest was great, but it also brought decadence and sophistry along with it.
Aaaand of course the Romas were greatly influenced by Greek culture after all, and the circle completed once again some hundreds of years later.
It's almost like clockwork. Civilizations become great and achieve a lot of things culturally and technologically and whatnot, and then succumb under their own weight and sloth. Then the next one comes and takes over, following the same trajectory.
One can even notice the same pattern unraveling right now. The only difference is we're building AI, which will finally break the circle (at least at the level of the human species).
