Bagel edition

>I'm new to the stock market, what stocks should I buy?
Before you buy anything, make a brokerage account and read investopedia articles and/or the books in the OP list. If you don't have a broker, you can't buy stocks, and if you blindly buy things without understanding how the stock market works or doing any research on the individual stocks you're buying, you will lose money and it will be entirely your fault.

heres what commie idiots don't understand. it doesn't matter who gets an overall larger percentage of the pie, it matters that the daily life of the average person gets better. muh 1% is always going to make more during bull runs (they also lose more during bears - unrealized usually) but the average worker is better off today than 5 years ago. This is why this "bear" talk is bullshit. we are getting higher paying jobs that are out pacing inflation, the GDP is growing and maybe, just maybe some youths will decide on trade school instead of womyns studies and come out making six figures in 1-3 years instead of 30K to read poetry to old people

For those of you interested in how markets actually work. Check this out. Don't pay for it, but its interesting to see.

Short summary: HFT pools (dark pools) are hidden liquidiy volume in the markets and account for over 1/3 of all trades. However their volume isnt visible to the regular goys (us).

If they are buying then they are doing so to cover for large funds who are going shot (to provide liquidity). If they are selling, the opposite. It is a leading indicator of large corrections. I suggest you check it out. The tea leaves seem to indicate a large correction with possibly more to go.

Can't crash the market without protecting retirement funds somehow. also remember entire states invest in things. illinois, california -- both of which are borderline bankrupt as it is. market saves them and saves everyone in their state, provided the governments and 401k managers aren't skimming off the top or overall making shitty trade deals. (california consistently spends 401k monies and invests retirements funds and then loses it -- happened once just just recently with california and it was a massive scandal plus lawsuit), and illinois skims off the top and the state is now bankrupt essentially as a result.

okay newfag. shorters don't crash economies. shorters protect it by providing an extremely limited reality check to retarded perma-bulls. blaming shorters is unironically a commie tactic and it's why the market can be so irrational, is because it's extremely difficult for shorters to survive even if they're correct they are punished for even attempting to get information into the market that violates the trendline. read Reminiscences of a Stock Operator you'll understand this more and get a better idea about how some of the fucked up "its teh shorters" laws came about for wrong reasons and have stayed with us for the same fucked reasons until today.

Tesla is a good example of exactly this issue. of course tesla dude is anti-shorters, his company is possibly the most shorted company in the market right now because of any number of reasons. But I will bet good money that the number of anons that actually ARE shorting it, here, is extremely extremely low -- it's SUPER expensive to short Tesla. I'm actually on the fence about tesla -- but it's a good thing, because almost all normal people are priced out of the market on capturing the downside on tesla because the cost is insane. same with google.

possibly related though -- there was an anon on here yesterday who said: you know what i'm going to get a call on SNAP i think it's oversold. he bought a super short timeline call when it was selling at like $6.60 with a short time horizon predicting a move toward $7.50 or so. he was yelled at like crazy on here. I thought that was probably a smart move, and yesterday i bought some shares in snap because i also though somewhat oversold.
Today, that anon was right and could have made bank in a single day by getting out of that position right away. I'm also up, but not selling because I bought shares and not calls and I don't like to do quick moves like that. but that's a stock i'm watching sort of closely, it's moving a lot right now.

That's an expensive (and riskier than usual) bet right now because everyone also is thinking like you. Buying that immediately after a big move is somewhat risky imo because institutional and bigger retail investors will get there first, but waiting slightly and then doing it (for instance the same play like tomorrow, or the next day) if we're around the same place might be ok. today's friday, also -- a lot could happen over the weekend. That's why i'm out for right now, don't want to hold anything from now until monday until i know more about what's going on and have a better chance to reflect a bit on what all happened (and can read more about the market thinks about what happened).

Still learning , desu. I feel fact since you are saying that I guess my next comment to you would be not to assume people know what they are talking about here. This applies to me also. I have a PhD in economics and focused on economic history more so. I’ve read a ton and analyzed a ton about markets. But I can also state for a fact that I myself am a terrible trader, and make wrong moves constantly. Experience imo has been a much better teacher than grad school and books ever have been, and sadly I do not have much actual real and true market experience for myself.
I do think it’s important to read about prior historical habbenings from earlier and historical market moves throughout history , gives some perspective on maybe how to think about current situation ...and my reading and maths led me to focus on short side of market since it’s harder and I thought I would have a slight edge there with trading. All I can say is that I make more at my day job than trading , and also I still currently HAVE a day job , so until I do this full time or make better bets I’d say don’t put too much weight on anything I say. (Also for the same reason I know enough to not believe financial press and or quant reports that have the goal of dazzling you with fancy numbers and equations — there is no equation , desu, I promise)

Pro tip: If you are young and in it for the long haul maybe consider going in on REIT's that focus on nursing homes and assisted living. The silver tsunami is coming and eventually, you'll end up in those kind of places too so might as well in on it while the getting is good.

it makes sense intuitively that a top 50 or 100 equal weighted fund would outperform the SP500

the SP has a bunch of meme companies that dont grow

a top 100~ similar to the Russell thing but equally weighted would allow the top 20~ companies that are typically very non-volatile to be a solid basis to your portfoio and teh bottom say 30~ or whatever would still be giant companies that know what they are doing, yet still have a lot of space to grow
