My college was paid for by an uncle who made a shit ton selling Kirby vacuum cleaners with no "exact" price and a whole lot of "whaddaya think it's worth" salesmanship. He retired at age 56 and invested in pretty stable things like precious metals and real estate when he saw they were undervalued. While both of those have had ups and downs, his idea was that physical things you actually own and can sell have value in a declining market, but they're still a LOT easier to sell to suspicious folks that have been beaten down by a speculative economy when things go badly south.
