Because that's not how gambling works. Every time you lose you feel the need to get it back. Every time you win you feel like the smartest guy in the room and feel the need to replicate it. Being truly good at options is a combination of smarts, luck and discipline. The vast majority of people can manage two of those traits max. That's why a lot of people here are against options in general, because they fall into the category of only having two of those skills. I'm in the same boat as them, I've been wiped out multiple times. But every time I win I put a chunk of that money into long term div investments. Would I have been better off just putting that money into the divs in the first place? Probably not, but I'm not going to go back and look because I play a small amount of options for fun. Options are fun. You will not win in a meaningful way that you couldn't replicate trading actual stocks, unless you have all three traits I mentioned earlier as well as the time to research and monitor your contracts.

Been trying to understand puts lately. Can someone help clarify a few questions from me?

1. When you purchase a long put contract, you can then opt to sell that contract to someone else (in which case the original seller of the contract still bears responsibility for upholding the insurance).
2. You can also choose to exercise the contract in which case you need to already own or purchase 100 shares of the underlying stock. In what situation would you sell the contract vs. exercise it?
3. How liquid is the market for options vs stocks? Would I have a harder time selling long puts that I purchased?

the top funds were basically all some variation of money market funds and government bonds, with short term bonds fairing better than long term ones. you see this in times of quantitative tightening like we have been experiencing, the federal reserve's interest rate increases essentially make cash more valuable. they set the demand for cash, more or less. it's an interesting process.

the mentality of an options trader, or really, a gambler, simply does not work that way.

i struggle with it too. i have $75K available to me in my vanguard margin account, money they're willing to lend me to buy securities. i bought Altria Group very near the bottom, 100@$42.66. i had such a strong feeling it would bounce. the yield was tremendous (7.30% or so), the company is a cash machine, it was at a 52-week low, and ultimately people love consumer staples stocks that are on sale. i could've bought up to 1750 extra shares. the stock is back to $48.84, my per-share profit is $6.18, and i could've made a clean $10K in a few days just trusting my instincts.

BUT, i didn't really KNOW it would jump $6. look at the chart, there's plenty of times over the last few months someone could take the same logic and say, the stock's on sale, time to jump in. and if they rode that down to the 52-week low of 42.30, they'd have been crushed. margin and options are really fucking dangerous if you aren't insanely disciplined, and if you are, they're merely very dangerous.

Bro ran inside to listen and came out lying (to entertain Gramps) that he totally heard it.
Took that 'wtf' and morphed it into how I could see the child inside of him and him relating and reaching out to us, and it's all timeless and he's in heaven playing again

My grandparents own a farm. As a young lad I spent a lot of time there. As I got older I helped out a lot to. So I picked up a few things along the way. Hard work for one.

Nobody ever gave me shit, I earned it all on my own. Was able to buy my first car and pay for my community college classes with the money I made from farm and yard work.

Nowadays you can't get a kid to do jack shit unless it has something to do with phones.

Not true. They're out there. In fact some kids seem sort of relieved when you give them responsibilities and trust them to carry them out. I think the problem in current society is kids, especially teenagers, are treated as infants for far too long. There's a frustration there that autonomous work seems to alleviate. That's my experience at my wagie jobber anyway. It's not so much about the labour as it is about the responsibility. I give them things to do and let them at it, such that if they screw it up it's their problem, if they do well they are in turn well compensated.

They realize high schools are run like some perverse combination of a day care and prison. It drives them crazy. I think this is an overlooked component of school shooter pathos.
