how do references even work? I only ever worked bullshit mcjobs and did freelance webdev. I didn't even talk to my professors so wasn't able to use them as references when I was thinking about grad school.

I feel like a social retard even though I'm pretty out going and not really the anxious neet type. I just know nothing of networking and the formality of it. When I was asked for references at work, I gave them a loan officer & consultant I worked with to fund my first commercial property acqusition. They were much more impressed because I was able to basically buy the property with $1 down, and it was a job at a large REIT.

Human Resources Director here: most places only fill out a standard reference template for you with your name, job title and dates of employment. References have to be factual - nobody puts anything off-piste anymore as it might effect future employment, which leads to candidates suing previous employers.

You can get fired from your job and still get a template reference. The only time a template isn't used is if there is a duty of care towards the next Employer (e.g. you molested a kid and apply for a school job)
