Don doesn’t really need the job anyways. Retirees just get bored. He can find another hobby. Doubt Walmart would cut them, though. They really don’t cost the company hardly anything, and it gives them a warm human face when the customers first walk in. No one can predict the future; I'm sure the people that invented the ATM in the 70s thought that it was over for bankers too but there's still millions of the bastards. Besides, there was a time in the not so distant past that the employment participation rate was far lower than it is now, and that's despite what automation has been developed and oldheads like the guy in OP working through retirement as a hobby. The beauty of automation is the timing. You're going to have tens of millions with no job at the same time you have an extremely underfunded police force because automated cars have put an end to speeding tickets and drunk driving and red light violations and all the other bullshit fines they use to fund their departments.

Jobs are not going to be "lost". There will just be greater access to wealth with people doing other, less taxing jobs such as programming. It's what happened in the industrial revolution and it's what going to happen now.
