assuming you don't game, a T450 or 550 or newer will do everything you need and last all four years. If you have to game, grab a w550s with an i7 for like 400 bucks, they are surprisingly compact for what you get. If you can't get a good deal on a thinkpad (hard to outbid bots sometimes), dell 74xx series are just as good and go for similar prices.

Plus thermal paste, internal battery, standard battery, extended battery. I even paid for a windows license (cheap on eBay). Plus a second keyboard because I broke the first one. Also it was missing screws. Not sure with my thinkpad came with half the screws needed. That was a pain finding the right size.
