I put my heart and soul into making a free mobile mmorpg with no microtransactions, browser mining, advertisements, etc... just 100% an out of pocket cost for me. I've been running the servers for a year now but only have like 5 players. the players who do play it love it (unique mechanics so it's 100% stress free, without any grinding), and I even have an app in the app store.

so I have a good product that people like, but trying to advertise is hell. YouTube videos don't really work for this sort of game (it's almost like a new genre of mmorpg... you'd log on and play in small bursts, while you build up an xp multiplier while offline).

how do I get more players? I'm willing to spend a lot of money for it, as my dream has always been to make a game, and I never had delusions of profit.

oh, you can just play in the browser on iphone:

https://www.towerclimbonline.com/#/play

the game is entirely open source:

https://github.com/RDiGregorio/towerclimbonline

i was coding it off and on for about 2 years, mostly during weekends or some days after work when i'm not beat. i continue to update it every week or so with player suggestions.

it's coded in dart, using angular for the client side framework. postgres database.

I love these kinds of games.
I think the issue is it doesnt look interesting.

Do some borderline clickbait, pay some thot to play it, i dont care. Find stock footage

Sell your game like its fun to play, not like its a lonely dude spending his savings on ego stroking over 5 people.

"no self promotion/advertising", my reddit threads are always locked almost immediately. i did try to pay 2 different people in bitcoin to advertise on places like reddit and various social groups, and it didn't have any impact.

if there's an advertising company i could pay, i'd do that.

Use you money on a ui designer and have them improve the face of your game. With appstore games what sells are looks not mechanics. As good as they are you need people to get it first then the mechanics keep them there

Ignore all the faggots who've never made anything.
This game looks like it might attract a niche audience if they could understand how to play. Visually, it all looks the same so maybe add variety. Adding fog of war where everywhere you haven't been is black would make it more adventures.
And remember, spend 10 times the amount of time marketing that you did making the game. The hardest part is always convincing people that what you made is worth their time.

i have about $100K to throw at this, plus my salary is $140K from my wage slave job.

i'm willing to pay an artist a really good salary to make the game look good, so the suggestion is to do that before paying for advertising?

my thought was to focus on gameplay, and make the game as fun as theoretically possible, focusing on game design 100%. i didn't feel the graphics would matter much, but i guess i was wrong there? heavily influenced by roguelikes, which focus entirely on gameplay and have shit tilesets.

Dude I love Roguelikes but as a part of the fandom its only really except able if its a Roguelikes desu. Plus the Roguelikes niche is smaller and more dedicated. If you are appealing to mmo and rpg fans getting nice pixel art and a great ui are well worth your time. Shop around for someone who could do your character and tile art, and someone for ui. You ha e the mechanics then it's money on advertising. Don't try pay individuals to advertise it, use legitimate companies.

Try to hire someone to do the art. If you can’t afford it get someone from china. Think about how much time it took you to learn programming, now realize it will take even longer to become a good artist. Its so much easier just to pay a chinese person a few dollars an hour to do it. Instead of wasting so much of your own time.

The art side takes alot of skill and tons of time, I'd recommend hiring someone. But if you like to give it a shot go ahead. And active sprites that move and Bob are way better than stationary ones but obviously more expensive

Well I guess you have to decide what you actually want to achieve with your game. Mechanics are important but if you make your game very inaccessible for the average player then you will only have a very niche player base.
Take a look at the space gsg aurora for example, it has great mechanics but it will never have widespread success.

>> No.15206436

Hey OP, I know this isnt the board but could you detail your experience as a lone wolf programmer? Did it takes 5 years full-time to achieve this? I'm a soon-to-graduate programmer and I would love to achieve at least one project completely alone, but I am afraid it will be utter shit

even if it's shit, you can throw it in your portfolio and land a 6 figure job pretty easily (even if you don't have a university degree; i got my $140k engineering job off this shit project and a community college degree). i'd suggest not going as bleeding edge as i did (dart), because you'll get cut (i need to upgrade to dart 2 which had a completely different type system, and upgrade my angular version, which is hell since everything's different in the newer versions). stick to typescript and probably react for the front end.

as much as people like to troll in this tread saying i've wasted my life, this project has been the best thing that ever happened to me, even if i have basically no one playing it, just from a career and experience perspective.

i provided analytics and consulting services to top brands and gaming companies like tencent, netease, king, gluu

you are right you need at least a few screenshots in a vertical landscape

you need to add keywords to your game and a description

there is a real science to this stuff. better to hire someone on fiverr to do most of these creative elements for you too as it will save you time as other anons said

typescript is javascript but with static typing. it "compiles" to javascript by deleting the type annotations
