In terms of creating a community coin from scratch, the longer it stays off exchanges, the more it spreads. People measure a coins value based on what others will actually do for you rather than in dollars and cents.

PND was being tipped all over the place before it hit an exchange, and once we were able to trade it for BTC, it started to die and people stopped giving them away and being creative.
