A lot of noble choices ITT. My favorite has always been this, the shuttle launch pad.
>parents never too wealthy
>still get one lego set each birthday and hollidays
>usually not the newest ones because low demand in city
>reading the catalog with my brother picking who gets which
>imagining what it would be like to play with the large sets like >>18568562 or >>18574747
>trying to replicate models from the tiny pictures
>each minifig has a name and story spanning years of development
I don't want to go back because I wouldn't be able to bear losing it again, but I don't want to ever forget it. I still have every piece saved in a tub that won't be sold but maybe won't be opened either.

Now I'm here thinking if the drop in oil can cause ripples on the plastic production and toymaking companies.

There was a lot of customization, and there still is. You could get a new dude by mixing and matching any legs, arms, heads and weapons. The pieces were large but with a lot of holes for pins and axles, so you could add technic parts and keep expanding.
The hero factory system was the true scam, called CCBS. Instead of nice parts with customization, everything is short pieces with balls and clips, no technic holes. All you can do is different sizes of skeletons and add clip-on bland armor. They use it for everything constraction, including a poor bionicle reboot and star wars action figures.

It's the moneymaker, the same retold tale of elemental warriors in a variety of scenarios with the main enemy wearing all black. It's not the pure ninja and samurai of old, it's power rangers in China. It started in 2011 as beyblades but now it's a flagship theme with a big production movie, tv series, and some of the largest and most detailed sets that aren't licensed. It's their excuse to release mechs and dragons and castles.

>current lego designers grew up with the same lego sets and videogames
>they constantly slip references to those in new sets
And at the same time disney strenghtens its grip on the company, with more expensive disney paraphernalia and starwars out the ass. But then there's lego angry birds, and lego minions, and lego mario, and the lego take at funko pops.

I remember vividly wanting this set >>18568214 really fucking bad and I BEGGED my mom one time at a toy store to get me one. I was bawling and kicking like a child.

My mom was doing the usual chiding thing until she just sighed, her face crumbled as she said "I'm so sorry Anon, mommy should've gotten a better job but this other tiny set is all I can afford right now."

To this day, whenever I'm at Target or whatever and walking past a young mom looking at the Lego aisle with a kid in tow, I can't look. I keep remembering my mom's absolutely dejected face at the thought of not being able to buy her kid his favorite toy while trying to raise him in a shitty studio apartment. I fucking hate myself for making her feel that way.

Too bad this thread was a dumpster fire of nostalgia instead of being about the actual topic OP presented. Its worth discussing.

Usually we see a smal pump prior and dump after, then within months a parabolic rise from looking at past events I guess.

I built a parrot out Legos when I was 7 from a picture on the box and then realized it was gay and asked my parents for a Sega to play Mortal Kombat.
