And that's just my own most recent work. Ever been to a bank in the past decade? If it automatically reads the digits on the cheque you're cashing in, it's using a 90's deep learning algorithm. Self-driving cars? Deep learning. Google search? Bing? Deep learning. Google translate? Deep learning. Cortana, google now, etc.? Deep learning.
Perhaps ironically, I think all of this is a mistake and that there ought to be a much simpler approach which involves minimal use of these blackboxes to solve otherwise general problems. But for the time being, deep learning not only works, it's by far the best tool available for virtually any task whatsoever.

However you don't really get grant money for research projects involving DL much anymore, it's cooled down a lot in recent years. I expect this is mostly due to competition though (e.g. everyone is doing it).

No, the agreement was payment in full upon job completion. That's standard for remodeling / repair jobs that come in under $10k. If you can't afford that then you take out a loan to pay it and then pay the bank in installations. Contractors don't usually do payment plans.
