Just food for thought. Many of you fomo'd in on silver, gold when prices were high.

Here is an easy way to reduce your stack average considerably.

1, Find a seller on ebay offering 1oz gold or 1-2kilo bars of silver
2, Make sure he has few sales as possible
3, Make sure he is offering standard post
4, Place order, recieve goods
5, deny they ever arrived, post is very unreliable due to COVID (even signed for cant be proven as they wont take a signature
6, file a claim with ebay/paypal
7, free one-off win! (Only do it once)
8, see what that free bar does to your stack average
9, profit
10, consider it reparations from boomers

Thankfully its easy to open a mail fraud case with the police department and submit the report to paypal/bank/ebay and get your local Post Master and the Post Master of your buyer to verify trace the package route all the way to the buyer address regardless if tracking was used or what shipping method was used. Even weight scans along the route for claims that an empty box was sent or if the buyer tries to get smart with a return with a box full of rocks instead of the item.

these metals are all in wide abundance, and only worth really anything by the ton.

US copper production is expanding 20% in the coming years.
Russian nickel mines closed due to market saturation, are are expected to be mothballed for 2 years until demand increases again.
Bronze alloy production is hard to track but its not all that valueble.

Basically unless your stacking in the tonnage there isnt really a point to go after coins of these metals.

I believe it's both: palladium is in a bubble and platinum is underpriced. Both metals are heavily driven by industrial use and palladium is the metal used in catalytic converters for internal combustion engine vehicles. There was a palladium bubble in the early 2000s that ran the spot price to about $1,000/oz (Ford Motor Company got burned by this bubble) before crashing down to about $200/oz. During this bubble, auto manufacturers transitioned to using platinum in catalytic converters. It appears that once the palladium bubble popped, catalytic converters once again started using palladium.

For vehicles that use a diesel engine, platinum is the preferred metal for the catalytic converter. However, the past few years saw a diesel scandal as auto manufacturers were faking their emissions reports. This has caused a backlash that has accelerated Europe's current move to less polluting engine technologies (gasoline, electric) while also ending the expansion of the diesel car fleet into countries, such as the US that are largely use gasoline. Thus, even prior to the global shut down due to the SARS 2.0 pandemic, platinum has seen a drop in demand from ICE cars as they shift to using palladium and from diesel cars as the number of cars produced falls.

You can still sell and put the proceeds into something else. I believe you'd be looking at about a 30% loss at the moment. Unpleasant but not catastrophic.

This is just my opinion but I think palladium has further to fall. It was in a very clear bubble (look at the price chart) and with new auto sales due to fall off a cliff due to the corona virus shut down, demand for palladium is going to fall. Palladium is much more an industrial metal than a monetary metal.

No problem. Look at it this way. You said you put 10% of your investable assets into Pd and it's down about 30%. All said and done, if you were to sell, your loss is 3% of your investable assets. All said and done, while all losses are painful, 3% isn't too bad. People who lived through the dot-com and housing bubble crashes saw losses of about 50% each time.

Rarity has some bearing on prices but there must also be demand. Some years ago, William Shatner had a gall stone (or was it a kidney stone?) removed and was able to sell it at auction for about $30,000. Surely, there is only one gall stone that was taken out of William Shatner. If you had a gall stone, would you be able to sell it for $30,000 because, surely, no one else has a gall stone taken from your body? It would not sell for anything in all likelihood because, in general, there is zero demand for gall stones.

That is the case with palladium and platinum. Outside of their industrial uses, there just isn't a tremendous amount of other demand for it. For monetary purposes, gold is perhaps the best metal because of its color, density (in-hand feel), and resistance to essentially every substance encountered in every day life. Silver has its place as a monetary metal because of its color, density, and plenitude. Silver's plenitude makes it an excellent monetary metal for small transactions. There is a very practical reason that gold and silver were used as money by almost all advanced cultures.

The problem with palladium and platinum as monetary metals, IMO, is that they look like silver but are far more expensive. [They were also not really known until a few hundred years ago.] This goes back to cultural momentum but if an expensive metal can be easily, surreptitiously replaced with a less expensive metal, that metal is less desirable as a monetary metal. With today's technologies, it's much easier, although still a pain in the butt and requiring expensive equipment, to detect substitutions.

Barring monetary chaos or a massive bubble in precious metals, I don't see palladium and platinum hitting the price multiples of gold or silver in your posting.

I wasn't commenting about the price of platinum so much as I was commenting about the platinum:gold price ratio. In your posting I originally replied to, the platinum:gold price ratio is in excess of 11x. I don't see that happening.

That said, I do agree that platinum appears to be underpriced and I have about 15 troy ounces of platinum for funsies. If the platinum:gold price comes close to 2x, I'm selling all of my platinum. At the moment, due to the prices I bought platinum, I would probably sell a portion of it if platinum prices equalled gold prices.

i think most if not all people, including normies, would prefer a 1 toz. bar of GOLD over PLAT. so in this case platinum historical value vs. gold isn't very relevant. gold has 1000000X more sex appeal and better public image. to the point where much of btc's value is based on it calling itself the digital gold. when people say something is very good they say it is the gold standard. when sound money people talk they reference a gold standard. gold is more valuable and important than platinum. that's not just my opinion. it's public opinion. platinum is too niche. people have to even refer to it as white gold for them to understand it in jewelry terms.

it makes sense platinum is more valuable than silver due to the anti-corrosive properties, strength and rarity but it will never be more valuable than gold. central banks are stacking gold. the london price fix of gold is run by the Rthschilds. gold is so important that dictators are killed for it so their gold can be taken. we hear about gold all the time. gold is much more beautiful than platinum. only a fucking brainlet would buy platinum jewelry or rings. i can see why would want to buy it as an investment and hedge, but just don't count on it being more valuable or higher priced than gold. not going to happen. just look at mining stocks and etfs, all referenced in terms of gold or silver.

Decent premiums as well as a 1/4 oz (pure gold 7.78g) gold coin will cost you around £420 where as a sovereign with around the same pure gold weight (7.322g) will cost you £365.

If your going for a bigger investment just go for a full 1 oz Britannia or something more aesthetic like a queens beast.

The issue of capital gains on ASEs and AGEs was discussed one or two days ago in one of these PMG threads. While the anon seemed very certain in his assertions, I find it very difficult to believe that the US government would allow any capital gains in these coins to be either untaxed or taxed at an advantaged rate. If that were so, the premiums on the coins would be far higher than they are.

In fact, doing a quick look up, AGEs are not required to be reported on Form 1099-B. That does *not*, however, make any capital gains from sales of AGEs exempt from US federal income taxes. They are taxed at the marginal rate, capped at 28%.

Those who don't pay the capital gains taxes risk audits and fines if the IRS should discover undeclared income. I'm not saying it's fair (investors should be able to at least deduct the rate of inflation out) but it is what it is. As Benjamin Frankling said, "Nothing is certain in life but death and taxes."

If you have a tremendous amount of PMs you want to sell all at once, it's likely that it will be very difficult for you to avoid paying capital gains taxes. I'm certain that for very clever people, there will be ways to sell the PMs that make it very difficult to track the sale and capital gain.

The best way to avoid the immediate capital gains taxes is to own PMs in a tax-advantaged account such as a 401K or IRA. Typically, that means you have to own PMs through ETFs like PHYS, PSLV, CEF, GLD, etc. However, for Americans, I do remember that there is a way to own AGEs and maybe ASEs in a tax-advantaged retirement account. Note, only precious metal coins issued by the US Mint qualify. You'll have to look that up yourself but I would probably recommend against it as I suspect the storage and management fees are going to be unreasonably high. You're better off owning an ETF and buy a rifle with a lot of ammunition. If the ETF company screws you, persuade them with your rifle. :)

FWIW, I believe that the ETFs such as PHYS, PSLV, CEF, which are trusts that own allocated metal, are safe. If they somehow blow up, the world has probably gone Mad Max and having gold or silver isn't going to help that much. You'd be far better off with tons of gasoline, canned food, guns, and ammunition.

Can they be redeemed for gold? Has anyone tried to so? Do you have to go to Utah to redeem? If you think they're cool and would like to own some, there's nothing wrong with that. However, if you are using these things to hedge the purchasing power of the USD, liquidity may prove to be unnecessarily difficult.

If you're using the Utah gold backs as a way of owning gold, it's entirely possible that there will be a spike in the spot gold price and you will want to sell your gold to move into a different asset. If it takes you days, weeks, or months to sell that gold back, you may not be able to get the price you want as the spot gold price could fall rapidly.

Don't believe me? Take a look at what happened to the price of silver in 2011. If you owned silver in the form of bars or coins, you could have gone to a coin shop or an on-line broker like APMEX and sold it almost immediately at over $45/oz. In the case of APMEX, they will probably hedge their purchase from you with a futures contract while they await the delivery of your metal.

If you had diddle around with an illiquid instrument like the gold back, it might take you a week or more to sell it or redeem it during which the price fell quite a bit.

In general, no. The only thing that matters is that the weight of the silver is as stated. I am hardly a Jew. I use the term "Mad Max" because it suggests that the entire infrastructure of civilization fails. So long as there is rule of law, there is not very much risk of something like PHYS going bust. There are some who insist that one must take physical possession of PMs due to risk of a wipeout in paper instruments. It would be quite difficult for that to happen except in a situation where there is an absolute break down in the rule of law.

Capiche? As for using an IRA, it should be obvious what benefits there are to using it. If you're thinking you can get away with not paying capital gains taxes without use of a tax-advantaged account, be my guest. Truth be told, I hope you get away with it because the taxation of what is essentially protecting one's existing purchasing power is wrong. But if you get caught and are prosecuted with solid evidence, you'd better hope I'm not on the jury because I'll vote for a "guilty" verdict.

I know the ASE, maple, kangaroo etc are pretty much standard for sale everywhery, and they are safe options. But it could still be worth looking at European options, although I'm not sure if pre euro currency is also easy to get on the international market. But I'm sure you have traders that have them.
