There's a date (called the ex-dividend date) if you buy the stock before the ex-dividend date, you will receive the dividend - after the date of record, you can sell the stock and you'll still get the dividend
Think of it as like there's a cut-off date where you have to be holding the stock to receive the dividend, however after that date passes you're free to sell it and still receive the dividend

You're not the first one to have this idea :^)
It depends a lot on the company - some companies, yes
The problem is that many people buy the stock to capture the dividend, so then very often the next day the stock falls by more than the dividend you receive
Eg. Buy $100 stock to receive $4.00 dividend, stock falls to $95 - you lose $1.00
This doesn't always happen though - sometimes in good stocks investors in the ticker see the dividend as more money to invest back into the stock driving it up higher (so then you benefit both from the dividend and from the stock gaining)
You also have to consider that you do not receive the dividends right away - it often takes ~1 month for it to actually show up in your account
