I wageslave construction since I got laid off from my cushy airline job thanks to wuflu, and my unemployment benefits ran out. Depends what is your job. For some roles performance is easier to quantify than others. Example HR vs. Sales.
As mentioned previously KPIs can be a decent indicator. However, they can be misleading and you cannot apply that to every role out there. Also it depends on the metric employer, manager etc. Some prefer to measure by lips to ass ratio

Evaluation by team lead every 6 months. My team lead is slacker who gives no shit so everyone in my team always gets 1.0. People working in other teams have competent leaders who actually assign various scores. Guess which teams have better chance for receiving bonuses and raises.
