Tether Limited (the company) gives you USDT tokens if you give them USD, on a 1 to 1 peg. 1 token is basically a claim to 1 USD - you can redeem it at Tether Limited. that's what makes it stable in price.
the issue with tether is that not 100% of USDTs are backed by USD. the company also holds other dollar denominated assets. should these assets lose value, then tether could lose its backing, triggering a "bank run" of sorts where everyone tries to liquidate their tokens and Tether Limited runs out of USD, triggering bankruptcy.

No one has been able to answer me on this. If Tether were to somehow lose 100% of its value and I was borrowing USDT through AAVE to buy more linkies, would I be able to pay that loan off for free when it all dies?
