Dad is a lifelong blunderer but has pretty good luck and has good survival instincts so he's never been knocked down so hard he had to live in a ghetto or something (got close three times and always dodged it). Lied on his resume during the dotcom boom, got an IT job for an oil company, used that to collect several important certifications paid for by his employer, and just road that straight in to six figure salaries. My brother is very smart but he's also a sperg and he will readily admit he could just as easily have wound up doing landscaping or something his whole life. For him it was right time, right place, right time to lie, and smart enough to fake it until he made it. Then there is me. I never got the lucky break. I am not as smart as brother and so far have managed to fail my attempts to advance my career. Had two opportunities for a promotion to something that would have opened doors, failed both. Now covid is fucking my industry and me by extension without lube. I decided to learn how to trade back in 2016. It look a long time but I am finally on a path of consistent if not particularly impressive gains (yet). I still don't know what the hell to do about my career. Trading would be a lot more valuable for me if I had more money to throw in to it.

It works when applied to 'harder to spot' value. Classic value investing works but the profits are mostly subpar, timing is very important -buying COST this year (good timing) or buying CLF last year (bad timing), the key is to find stocks that have the most opportunities to trend, the largest odds of being on the right side of economy/mkt conditions. Most of value can be found in small caps tho, especially pharma stocks, but it requires some serious knowledge.
