Spacex is the most overhyped one of his companies with 0 value added to the world, its only use is starlink. Neuralink is 10x more important if they were to make what they really claim.

Asteroid mining has disgustingly huge potential, and we've already seen "working" proof of concept on a really small scale with Japan's Hyabusa2 which brought back asteroid samples in december. I also think there potential with space tourism and starlink, even if starlink is basically another tax dollar subsidy play, at least there's a value proposition. The mission to mars thing is basically just hopium to keep the hype going, but their rocket tech is actually pretty fucking impressive on its own merits.

but why

Their cars aren't profitable, their solar energy products aren't able to exist without government subsidy (the entire solar and wind industry is basically a scam, but thats a topic for another thread), they aren't the only ones with self driving car tech, or even the best self driving car tech, every single other vehicle company is coming out with their own electric vehicles (that they will sell exponentially more of for more profit than tesla). They do nothing unique or special as a company, and are outperformed in every category by basically every other major car manufacturer, yet their investor marketcap is as much as all of them combined. Tesla is basically just a pnd exitscam for elon and his family.

The one thing they can really be commended on, and that actually impresses the fuck out of me, is their marketing. They spend almost no money on it, but still have some of the most effective marketing I've ever seen, basically just using social media.

https://venturebeat.com/2020/10/30/waymos-driverless-cars-were-involved-in-18-accidents-over-20-month/
>Waymo’s driverless cars have driven 6.1 million autonomous miles in Phoenix, Arizona, including 65,000 miles without a human behind the wheel from 2019 through the first nine months of 2020. That’s according to data from a new internal report Waymo published today that analyzed a portion of collisions involving the robo-taxi service Waymo One, which launched in 2018. In total, Waymo’s vehicles were involved in 18 accidents with a pedestrian, cyclist, driver, or other object and experienced 29 disengagements — times human drivers were forced to take control — that likely would have otherwise resulted in an accident.

The accident rate is still way lower than the average for people driving their own vehicles (I think the average person gets in an accident every 100k mi. or something like that)

They are, I completely agree with that, but you guys act like tesla is the only one doing this and the only company capable of it. As said before Waymo, owned by Alphabet ALREADY HAS AN AUTOMATED SELF DRIVING TAXI SERVICE. Its already up and running. It already exists. Its already happening. Its been happening for years already. You can pay for rides from them already in select locations, for about the same price as an uber, the only thing keeping them from expanding is legislation (which is
also keeping tesla back). You can just buy their sensors and attach them to any car to make it self driving. They have like 70+ self-driving car partnerships/investments as well.

how is waymo a joke when its been functional for way longer (and paved the way for a lot of the legislation changes in the few places where self driving cars are legal), has an autonomous taxi service currently up and running, and is selling sensor kits to basically any company to make their own self driving cars? It sounds a lot like how people said android was a joke at first compared to blackberry, then it took over the world when google basically just let every manufacturer use it. Blackberry could have realistically won the smartphone war if they adopted a similar mindset instead of trying to be exclusive.

This is how they do. They pour billions of dollars in r&d into stuff, make a good version themselves, then sell/license the tech to the highest bidder and let them run their business for them. Like, tesla is only going to have the self driving option on their cars, for about $10k extra, and Waymo charges $7500~, and it can be adapted for any car. Either way though, they're both dead in the water if legislation doesn't catch up quick.
