something to consider: european houses are much older and made of more solid material (brick, limestone, shingle roof, etc) so that may add difficulty adding HVAC in comparison with american homes which are mostly new developments that add hvac right from the beginning

Yes but what this means is that Eurpeans likely do not have a fully functioning central air conditioning system so that means heating isn't likely either. Once you get the taste of perpetual optimal and comfortable temperature 24/7, you can't go back to opening windows to cool down or staying near the fireplace. With my crypto gains I could become the HVAC mafia.

So basically, the American lifestyle is that of an enhanced private life and a disastrous public sphere. Cities are literally constructed or deconstructed in a way that harms the public sphere in beauty and daily life from city design and architectural aesthetics. In contrast the private space of an American is unparalleled anywhere else in the world from large ostentatious homes, abundant food, fancy appliances, air conditioning and a personal automobile for every household member.

European houses and buildings aren't made of shitty plywoods like in America and actually have isolation so the temperature remains stable inside for days before being affected by the climate.

I lived in Southern France and Greece, air conditioning was maybe required 5-6 days a year max, otherwise you would just open the window at night during summer and the house would be nice and cool for the rest of the day.

>> No.26067477

Britfag here. OP might actually be onto something. Houses here just have boilers for the central heating systems for the winter, no ACs. But the past 2-3 summers have been fucking unbearable, at least by our standards. Maybe he's right and the market for this is going to start to manifest over the next 5-10 years or something. You'd be up against quite the cultural barrier though. The UK is very 'green' focused at the moment and the general consensus is that AC's are terrible for the environment. I think this is unironically a lot of the reason they are so expensive and why no one has them, plus there's an inescapable irony to adding to global pollution through AC's to get away from the heat the global pollution is causing.

But OP - If you're into HVAC and you're any good at BMS there's a massive market over here for intelligent buildings and using BMS for energy efficiencies for offices and etc, a market which is barely tapped into and scarcely understood. There's only really a handful of companies in the UK that are actually worth their salt and businesses don't know shit about it. To them it's all wizardry and I've seen some very very lucrative contracts to install BMS in buildings for big clients. Most of the BMS kit in corporate buildings that already exists is legacy as fuck too, and a lot of that just plain doesn't work where companies are retarded and bring in contractors to do other shit who then rip through the wiring and kill of the LANS lol. Part of me wishes I had stayed in the BMS field longer because there's a lot of money to be made an independent or even a small team, especially if you offer businesses cost-saving type contracts where they pay an initial fee and then a % each year of what the BMS saves them in energy costs

Another reason why the number of residential units with AC is low is because in historic buildings in cities you are by law not allowed to shit up the aesthetics with the AC box and the only way to get AC is to build one central system hidden under the roof, that costs a lot and every unit in the building has to agree to it and pay for it and thanks to braindead "people" that usually doesn't happen. People around here are actually happy to go to work, because the office has AC kek.

While not HVAC/plumbing, I'm in a less skilled trade (cladding/downpipes/capflashing on commercial buildings), I did landscaping/hardscaping/masonry under this guy who was like the da Vinci of landscaping and won shitloads of awards, catalog covers, show home contracts, etc. So I would use those pictures to get jobs on the side on my own time (with his permission, I did a lot of the work on them, and he was super supportive of us starting our own companies). I could make more money in a weekend redoing someone's flower beds and making them a patio than I could in 2 weeks of doing the same backbreaking work for an hourly wage from any company.

Doing your own contract work is incredibly lucrative for anything. Whether it's soffit/fascia/downpipes, shingles, landscaping, HVAC/plumbing (if you're certified, idk if you can just be a handyman for that in north america), painting, etc. it's all work that's very high in demand. And, if you're just doing it on your own, your overhead will be way lower than any large company, so you can charge considerably less. Most large companies want guys like this to stay in business, because they don't want the small shitjobs, they want the big contracts, so most (including mine) will have a list of smaller guys they just throw the smaller jobs they don't want to do at. It keeps customers happy, and helps everyone stay profitable. Also, the big guys are smart enough to realize they kind of need competition to succeed longterm and have a large enough pool of trained/skilled employees in their given areas.

In regards to this thread, it's always baffled me that euros don't really get air conditioning units installed. Is it because their houses are 300 years old and aren't fitted with modern enough ventilation?
