That's not true at all. Most sats are not hardened against anything close to a storm on the level of carrington and again, large storms can generate current in inactive electronics, and can damage delicate systems like processors and electrical transformers.
Even assuming it's ONLY the transformers, they would be permanently destroyed, and it would take 5-7 years of global rare earth production to replace them all.

sure they CAN damage, but are not likely since the wiring in modern electronics is so small that they are unlikely to pick up much in the way of magnetic interference, as long as they are turned off they will be fine
