Suppose that Melvin and some other fags dumped so much stock onto the market that Gamestop's share price collapsed to something like a $0.01. For all intents and purposes, the stock has gone to zero. It doesn't force anything. They were basically predicting that gamestop was going to go bankrupt, which is a pretty fair prediction in today's market.
When a big firm does a huge short sell it also triggers other people to believe that the value is going down. They basically manipulated public opinion in the hopes of further devaluing the stock, and as the value continues to fall there's essentially nothing invested in them.
If they issue new stock that will only devalue existing stock further. It's why the government just doesn't print infinite money.
