I think free education is fine, but only if you're smart enough to actually go to university. Seems like in the US almost everybody goes to university even if they're dumb as rocks and getting a degree that has no job prospects. The sad thing is that despite paying insane amount of taxes, university isn't even free anymore in The Netherlands, boomers changed the law after they all got their free education and now people have to pay. It's by no means as expensive as in the United States, but many people do have pretty large debts because of it. My cousin has like 30k student loan debt. At least it's 0% interest for now.

Interesting. I think the Dutch school system generally works pretty well, but it's too complicated to fully explain here, but I'll try to give a brief overview if anyone is interested.

There's basically different levels of high school that you get sorted in based on a test you take when you're 12. Smartest kids go to VWO (~top 15%) till they're 18, after which they can go a real university that's focused on doing actual research and stuff. Slightly less smart kids go to HAVO till they're 17, can go to a lower tier of university after where they're trained for higher tier jobs. Dumber ones go to VBMO (which is again divided in 3 levels based on the test scores...) until they're 16, after which they can go to trade schools to get trained for specific jobs. The kids in the different high school levels go to different schools, have completely different classes, subjects, and teachers, and of course the higher levels are much more complex than the lower levels. I think it works better to sort kids like this early on because then you have classes of kids who are around the same level so you don't have to dumb down the classes to the lowest common denominator and give everybody the education that's fitting for them.

Depends on where you are. States set their own guidelines for schooling standards. My highschool had 3 different "levels" for core classes: a standard one for most students, an AP/honors one for the bigbrains, and a remedial one for the smoothbrains. For math classes, the standard track went up to trigonometry with a small amount of pre-calc. The AP track went all the way into calculus 2 stuff, while the remedial track only covered algebra.

Noncore classes (stuff other than english, math, science, history) were mixed between everyone. Though few of these classes were required to graduate.
