Further to this, stop loss is maybe third line of defense to try to make sure an initially winning trade stays a winning trade by the time you're out of it. First line: relatively modest initial profit take target (sell a third or half of initial buy in), second line: TA based sell signal. Third line: stops. For swing trading, mind you. Other strats have different ideas involved.

If i had gone with my normal profit take on silver and corsair, i would be further ahead than i am now. My profit take on corsair was a dollar too high and i didn't even set one for silver.
