How can I get in on this?
What cards should I buy?

What do you mean ‘coming’ Pokémon has been mooning for close to a year now.

I think yugioh cards might take off too. I bought a bunch of Pokémon cards years ago when I first started getting money. Probably not worth that much I just bought holos for $50

Card anon from the last few threads again. Please ask any questions and post any pictures you have of rare cards!

Tbh, you are a little late to the party, but there is still potential I believe. First things first, you'll need to do research on different cards, and sets and stuff so you can identify counterfeit cards and tell the difference between different printings and such (not as challenging as vintage magic, but still requires work).

The main money in collecting cards (pokemon, magic, yugioh) is in keeping sealed product. These will be where your biggest gains are over 5+ years of holding. The value comes from the speculative nature of a booster box or booster pack (keep in mind people are paranoid of weighted booster packs so they can be harder to liquidate, more on this if requested). The estimated value of a sealed product after opening is always LOWER than the value of the sealed product. Here are some examples of growth from my personal sealed collection:
Evolutions booster box purchased in September 2020 for $175CAD
>now selling for $100-1300 CAD

Ultra Prism booster box purchased October 2020 for $190CAD
>now selling at $400-450

Hidden Fates GX box set purchased throughout 2020 at ~$35 per box
>now selling for $80-200 depending on the art on the box

As far as single cards go the most money is in vintage product. This is true for yugioh, magic and pokemon.

For yugioh you want to keep an eye out for 1st editions from the first few sets (this is where my knowledge for yugioh ends desu, too many different rarities of cards).

for pokemon you want to look for anything WotC era with specific emphasis on looking for 1st editions and shadowless (shadowless 1st editions preferably) see pic related. For modern cards most of the cards hover around the $5CAD to $10CAD range, so are not really economical unless you run an eBay store or have a connection to an LGS (plus opening product is always a lower EV). Though some of the newer sets have chase cards (typically a Charizard - always big value in them) that are worth getting familiar with, some of the recents have been:
Burning Shadows: secret rare rainbow charizard
Hidden Fates: shiny charizard gx
Darkness Ablaze: Charizard VMAX
Champion's Path: shiny charizard V and secret rare rainbow charizard vmax
Vivid Voltage: rainbow rare Pikachu VMAX

The next big chase will be the shiny charizard vmax in Shining Fates releasing next month. This card will easily be a $1000 CAD card I think.

This is the same thing as chasing a pump in the markets, most of these sellers have been sitting on these cards waiting for an opportunity like this.
Personally I'd rather buy TCG cards that actually utilize the game part of it such as MTG or Yugioh.

If you have the ability to purchase cards through a japanese proxy service it is worth keeping an eye out for limited release Japanese promos. If you want to see the value of these items you can look up "pokemon scream promos", "charizard poncho pikachu" and "mario pikachu" on ebay sold listings. Two recently mooning japanese promos are the Sword and Shield "signed" promo cards of Hop, Bede and Marnie, and the Kawazawa Pokemon Center grand opening box set.

For some quick gains I recommend the following purchases:
Shining Fates seems like it might be pretty low allocations as 401games sold out of everything in literally minutes. If you see this in the wild it is a definite buy and flip. Special consideration should be given to the Elite Trainer Boxes (ETBs) and the Pikachu V box set as these will have highest demand.

The McDonald's 25th anniversary cards that are currently available in the US. There are good optics for these as they were printed during 2020 and are unlikely to get a reprint I think. The packs are small boosters of 4 cards unlike the individually wrapped cards from before, and are unavailable in Canada = big gains on the secondary market. My prediction is that they will mimic Pokemon POP boosters in long term value.

A promo card will be coming out in english at some point called "Special Delivery Charizard", no idea when, but you can expect this card to be instantly $200+. For comparison the Special Delivery Pikachu promo card that was available when the Canadian Pokemon Center website opened is selling for $400+ now (all you had to do to get it was spend $50 on the website).

Lastly with magic cards:
I haven't broken into this market too heavily, but the vintage magic market is pumping pretty hard. You would want to invest specifically in Reserved List cards as the market supply on them is pretty low. You can check mtgstock.com for more information on what the value of cards is currently, but pretty much every card on the reserved list has been following a price growth chart like pic related.

Talk about Revised cards is growing too, and a lot of those cards are pumping in price as the set gets older (white border cards), so buying rares from that set would probably be a good hold investment right now.

For magic you really need to know what you are looking for though, and there are a lot of fake vintage cards circulating, so prepare to get burned if you don't know wtf you're doing.

Lastly sports cards:
This is another market I've been trying to enter lately. Vintage sports cards can be huge money, we're talking 70s or older (the older the better)- talk to your grandpa and see if he has any old baseball cards from when he was a kid sitting around. Avoid cards from the 80s, 90s and 00s like the plague, unless they are MVPs or something (early Gretsky hockey cards for example).

I'm not sure of the value of holding sealed product for sports cards, but there probably is some growth in that field. A lot of the big money is in rare rookie cards, autos and patches. The value of these can fluctuate pretty heavily based on how the players are doing in real life obviously.

>> No.28711911

Lastly:
My sleeper advice for long term growth are the Fortnite cards made by Panini. Fortnite was(is arguably?) a huge game and a lot of kids from today will be looking to get nostalgic on cards like these in the future, not to mention some of the cards in these packs are already pushing $500+ currently.

I don't have any personal experience with F&B, but Rudy from Alpha Investments has been shilling it pretty hard recently. Seems like the game itself is designed to cater to OG Magic players. Looks fun. There is value in the singles and sealed boxes currently, just don't know if it'll peter out and disappear within the decade though.

Another game to keep an eye on is the reboot of the Digimon card game. It's been incredibly difficult to acquire sealed product for this. The game is supposed to be good, so single value will probably be rooted to whether its a playable card or not. Also wary of this as digimon has died once before, but there is still a lot of nostalgia for the series.

>>28712762
If you want to capitalize on the market now would probably be a good time, as there are rumoured Cosmic Eclipse reprints in the pipeline. More availability in the market will drop single prices down for sure, but this is speculative. Rosa is a pretty popular waifu though, so if you don't need the money, I think it would be a good long term hold.

Speaking of reprints, rumour has it that TPCi will be reprinting a bunch of old sets to make it more available for consumers. I'm not really sure how effective these reprints will be as the market is absolutely bonkers right now and it seems every single product gets bought up pretty much as soon as it hits retail. Additionally the sets that will be reprinted are probably going to be standard legal sets so that people can start building decks and shit again. The sets that fall under this and might be good "sell" indicatiors are:
Sun & Moon Cosmic Eclipse
Sun & Moon Team Up
Sun & Moon Unified Minds
Sun & Moon Unbroken Bonds
Detective Pikachu (doubt this will see much rerelease as the set is kind of shitty and it was tied to a movie)
Hidden Fates (seems like this one already got a reprint with the GX tins and ETBs recently, with Champion's Path and Shining Fates being out, I don't see them reprinting this SKU much either).

Yugioh is not really my wheelhouse. I suggest joining a yugioh facebook group or discord and connecting there. It seems like a misprint like this sold for $40CAD recently though, so not bad.

Speaking of misprints, one that was announced recently, and kind of just blipped away is Cinderace 036/202. The first printings were printed with a retreat cost of 1 and it has been errata'd to have a retreat cost of 2. Additional printings of Sword & Shield will probably reflect this change.

It would be pretty easy for a whale to buy up the regular and reverse versions of this card and then hold them until reprints enter the market...

This is my prize gem of my sealed collection. One of my local shop owners is kind of a hoarder, and had to move his shop to a new unit because of covid. I went in and asked him if he had found anything interesting, and he showed me the 1st edition booster box of Gym Challenge for $1000CAD. Kind of laughed it off as being outside of my price range because I didn't know the value at the time. Checked online later that night and saw that a single booster pack was selling for like ~$360. Slept so shitty, was worried he was going to recheck price and put it way outside my price range. Went first thing in the morning and bought it. Never going to sell.

I found my old cards back in 2015, bough a case for them, and and tried to finish my collection again.
