I have a nice camper van for festivals but apart from that you can't beat a house or similar. Even when I go on outdoorsy trips (e.g. for climbing, hiking) I try to get actual accommodation; the improvement in sleep quality and everything else is tremendous. Vans for fun and certain situations but not for living in, for me.

The way that I do this is with a fully loaded 25' camper that I pull with my truck. If the truck breaks I can rent one and still move my living quarters. A van or rv is putting all your eggs in one basket.

We spend all day outside, in the woods hiking or climbing rocks, reading books etc. as other people pointed out there's a big difference between living in your van in a McD's parking lot or Wal-Mart and doing it because you want to for a period. Lots of people live in travel trailers and just park them in RV parks with hookups for a monthly fee. It's a hell of a lot more practical and you can build some equity in the same fashion. Plus you can drive your hauling truck into work and nobody is any the wiser.
