One of my elderly relatives was telling me, back around 2006, about how sorry he felt for kids even then. In the 1960s and 1970s, if he lost a job, he could have another a day or two later. Didn't matter if he had experience in the new field, he tried a bunch of different things. All any employer was looking for was a good work attitude and the ability to learn. All those "Horatio Alger" novels were pretty much real life -- start out in the mail room, get promoted to clerk, learn the industry, move up into management, end up as CEO.

Nowadays unless you have a bachelor's in Mail Room Technology and five years of experience, they won't look at you for an entry-level position in a mail room. Unless of course you're a disabled black lesbian midget, or related to someone in management.

Just to add my own experience, I got into computers in the 1980s. All I needed to do was tell someone I knew how to program and I'd get offered work.

By the late 1990s, all this "certification" crap had gotten memed into existence. Oh, you don't have your A+ and your MCSD and your Oracle whatever? Who cares if you've been doing this shit for two decades, you're unhireable. Then came the H-1B invasion and offshoring. Nowadays employers demand not only all the certs and a lack of a U.S. passport (because they prefer H-1B's since they can't change jobs easily), they also want to see a "portfolio" of open source shitwork and a pile of commits on GitHub.

I switched to patent law. At least in patent law, employers see experience and they say "oh good, someone who knows what he's doing." Point them at a few issued patents you've drafted and gotten through the system, or better yet some of the more uncommon work like reexams, and they love you long time.
