the mark value is so vitally important to options traders that even robinhood displays it, and that is a platform which hides a lot of important information from its clientele. as an example, if you take a look at the customization criteria for filtering the options book in ThinkorSwim, the very first criteria shown in the list is 'Mark' because it is that important.
the mark is the price that the market maker will instantly fill your option, regardless of their current risk. the mark is often times just the mid point between the bid and the ask, but not always. if the options market is leaning heavily in one direction the market maker shifts the mark towards the opposite direction because they need better slippage for taking on the opposing trades while remaining profitable while executing their gamma hedging.
if two individuals could trade options with each other, they could short more stock than actually exist, or create new shares without input from the equity/stock exchange. because of this, your counterparty is always the market maker in options trades.

Not only would you survive in that case you'd probably end up doing very well.
